A beautiful life on earth has ended too soon. Matt was born in Stillwater MN, and then brought home to Roberts, his home for his entire life and the place he never wanted to leave. He was baptized and confirmed at Roberts United Church of Christ, and graduated from St Croix Central High School with the Class of 2003. He began working for his Aunt at Carbone’s in Roberts when he was 15, a job he held for more than 20 years. He “burnt out” of the pizza business and landed at the new Kwik Trip in Roberts, and more recently worked as a property management assistant.
Matt loved his family and that was never more evident than the day his son, Brennan was born. He embraced fatherhood with all the love, compassion, and empathy his soul possessed.
Matt was a talented writer, musician, and photographer, truly a creative genius. This was likely a reflection of his love of books, music and movies. From the time he was a small child he loved scary movies. Ghosts, gremlins, villains, and werewolves fascinated him, along with the heros that defeated them. (Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or a good old silver bullet) He likely read everything published by Stephen King. His book and media collection rivaled any Blockbuster store or library, containing all the popular selections but also obscure titles that he devoured, analyzed, and shared as his personal critic’s choice recommendation.
We cherish the gift of every conversation shared with this beautiful human. His wit was a reflection of his brilliance and creativity. When he was present the banter was like a live comedy show. Although introverted, conversations were often gregarious, but thoughtful and thought provoking. He left you wanting more, but always left you with a smile.
Matthew was pure, pure, kindness. He was gentle, intelligent, helpful and empathetic; a rarity in the world today. He was truly a gift to the world and we were privileged and blessed to call him our own for such a short time.
A Celebration of Matt’s Life will be on Friday, November 13, 2026 at the Roberts Congregational Church 1001 Birch Drive Roberts, WI. Visitation will be from 10 am – 1 pm with a service following at 1 pm. Food and fellowship will follow the service. Interment will be in Warren Cemetery in Roberts at a later date. Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

Greg and Katie, so very sad for the loss of your son.
Katie, I’m so very sorry for your families loss. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Matt and I met and became fast friends during his time with Kwik Trip. in Roberts. He was a bright light in every day we worked together and great friends outside of work. We shared stories of our families and was a great hugger. I will cherish the time we had together and I’ll miss your great smile. Fly high with the angels my friend.
Love you like a son my friend. Bless you!!
My deepest sympathies Katie and family.
Matt knew me by voice for our weekly pizza order even when we stopped in. He personified Good Neighbor. Our deepest sympathies to his family and the community.
Greg and Katie so very sorry for your loss. Our prayers for your family.
RIP Matt
I’ll always remember my nephew, Matthew for his photos. He had a gift for finding the angle, catching the perfect light, clicking at the perfect second that stopped time for a moment we wish we could hold onto forever. If you know his photos, you know how he saw the world – with appreciation, affection, and an eye for beauty.
He loved Roberts, Wisconsin. He was a homebody. Did he ever live anywhere else? Even as a little boy, my nephew told me, “I’m always going to live here!“ His photos of the familiar places in our community show his love Roberts Wisconsin. The photos he shared of his family, his beloved son, and his many friends taught me where is his treasure. Matthew was grateful for it all and never missed an opportunity to tell us he loved us. I imagine the great welcome he got in heaven from his grandmothers, grandfathers, & cousin Travis.
Gerb was truly one of kind and will be deeply missed by those lucky enough to have known him. He had many gifts, but what I’ll remember most was his ability to connect and see the best in people. His wit was unmatched and could find humor in even the most obscure situations. He was generous and caring to friends and strangers alike.
