Ronald Volkert, age 75, peacefully passed away at home with his family by his side. Ron served for 33 years as a patrol deputy, investigator, and as chief deputy. In 1998, Sheriff Paul Burch had just won re-election, however, he passed away shortly thereafter. Ron was the chief deputy at the time, so he was appointed to serve the remainder of that term to the end of 1998. Sheriff Dennis Hillstead was then appointed by Governor Tommy Thompson in January 1999 to fill the new term that Paul had just won in November. Ron remained as chief deputy until his retirement in 2005. He was also a New Richmond city councilman for 21 years. Services are pending.
Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

I worked with and ultimately for “Rotten Ronald” (his nickname) for almost 30 years. He was a much more than a co-worker; he was a friend. He will be missed by all who knew him. So sorry to hear of his loss.
I worked with Ron while he was a patrol deputy in the 80’s. Always felt he was a good man and a professional deputy.

For the short time we have known Ron, he became a good friend. We enjoyed his dry sense of humor and his great personality. He will be sorely missed. Much sympathy to his family.
