Summer can be a season of both activity and reflection. For those who are grieving—or simply feeling the weight of life—it can help to have spaces where you can be with others in a calm, low-pressure way.
That’s part of why we offer our Picnic in the Park at Roberts Park, a simple summer gathering hosted by Bakken-Young. It’s an opportunity to share a meal, enjoy some fresh air, and connect with others in the community.
If you’ve been looking for a gentle way to get out of the house this summer, you’re warmly invited.
What Is Picnic in the Park?
Picnic in the Park is a relaxed event held at Roberts Park. It’s not a formal ceremony, and there’s no expectation that you share your story or your feelings unless you want to. Think of it as a casual, friendly summer get-together, with a little extra care built in.
You can expect:
- Simple picnic-style food and refreshments
- Space to sit, eat, and talk—or simply listen and be present
- A welcoming atmosphere for individuals and families
- Bakken-Young team members available if you have questions or just want to say hello
It’s a time to be together, not to be “on.”
Who Is It For?
Picnic in the Park is open to:
- Those who are grieving a recent or past loss
- Family members and friends
- Anyone in the community who appreciates a kind, low-key place to gather
You don’t need to be a current or past Bakken-Young family to attend. If you have been thinking, “I’d like to be around people, but I don’t want anything too intense,” this may be a good fit.
What If I Don’t Feel Like Talking About My Grief?
That’s completely okay. While we know many attendees have experienced loss, there is no expectation that you share your story. Some people come to connect with others who understand. Others simply want an afternoon where they don’t have to pretend everything is fine, but also don’t feel pressured to talk about it.
You are welcome to:
- Chat about everyday things
- Listen more than you speak
- Find a quiet spot and just enjoy being outside
The goal is gentle connection, not a formal support group.

A Summer Moment to Breathe
Summer can be busy, and grief can make that busyness feel heavy. Our hope is that Picnic in the Park gives you a small pocket of time to breathe—to enjoy the outdoors, share a meal, and remember that you are not alone in whatever you’re carrying.
Whether you stay for a short visit or the whole time, you are welcome.
