Philip Black 05/25/2019

Philip Dowd Black, age 82, of Hudson died on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital following complications of an upper respiratory infection. Phil was born in Duluth, MN in 1936 and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1954. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy serving until 1957. In 1962, he graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Phil worked as engineer and inventor at 3M in St. Paul for 40 years. A steady source of love and care to his family and friends, Phil was a skilled mechanic and carpenter who enjoyed home improvement projects and had a lively interest in the arts. He is survived by his wife, Nell; daughters, Amy (Scott) Black Johnston, Sarah (Jenn Gori) Black, Margaret “Meg” (Eric Kjellgren) Black; grandchildren, Isabella and Oliver Black-Johnston, Carl Kjellgren; sister, Margaret “Peggy” Savell; brother-in-law, Don Warnke; and nieces and nephews. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret Black; sister, Roberta Warnke; and brother-in-law, Mike Savell. A memorial service was held Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church-West Campus (1205 6th St.) in Hudson. Visitation was also on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity. Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.
