ROGER ALLEN SMITH

January 24, 1936 — August 10, 2026

For 90 years Roger enhanced our family with treasured memories and antics.

Roger will always be fondly remembered as ‘Mark Trail’ in the out-of-doors ‘up north.’  His love for nature and the environment was key when he led family and friends into the BOUNDARY WATERS on many cross-country ski trips and canoe outings. He lived a quiet and private life, that was thoroughly enjoyed floating on his pontoon boat with a fishing pole and snack – ‘Living the Good Life’ – as he and son, Mike, would say with big smiles on their faces.

He was born in Charles City, Iowa, and lived there until graduation from Charles City High School.  He was an all-state star player on the football and wrestling teams.

Roger and Eleanor married and moved to Butte, Montana where he worked for Victor Chemical.

He served as Sargeant in the US Army’s Military Police Force while stationed in Germany for two years.  After returning to civilian life in Iowa, he was a Specification Analyst at Oliver Tractor/Hart Par Corporation in Charles City for 11 years.  A tornado struck town and demolished the tractor plant thereby leading him to St. Paul.

During the 38 years he worked for 3M he was named as “Best of the Best” Quality Recognition Award Recipients in Design Engineering Services.  He served as Purchasing Agent in the Engineering Division.

Roger achieved a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Metropolitan State University. He graciously gave of his time as a Church Elder, taught Sunday School, and was a Boy Scout Leader.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Smith; daughter, Michelle (Randy) Palaoro; granddaughters, Andrea (Brandon) Riley, and Kristina Gloeb.

 Preceding him were his parents: Millard and Florence Smith; five brothers: Weston Smith, Willis Smith, Marvin Smith, Carl Smith and Gordon Smith, and one sister; Mary Joan Smith.

Roger’s son, Michael, passed away in 2024.

Roger will be dearly missed, and while our hearts mourn his loss, we take comfort in knowing the Good Lord brought him home.

 A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church (900 Stillwater Road) Mahtomedi, MN.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.  Graveside and burial will be Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Peters Lutheran Church of Richfield Cemetery in Sumner, Iowa.
