Norman Nelson 12/12/2020

Norman “Bud” Leroy Nelson, 91, of New Richmond, WI, died Saturday, December 12, 2020 at The Deerfield Assisted Living with family by his side. He was born on December 2, 1929 in Cumberland, WI to Norman and Mabel (Soderquist) Nelson. When Bud was quite young, they moved back to the Soderquist family farm outside of New Richmond right across from Cedar Lake Speedway. He graduated from New Richmond High School in 1948. After graduation he worked at Doughboy and then St. Croix Press. He retired from St. Croix Press. His father served in WWI in the Army and for years he carried a letter from when his father got out of the Army signed by Commander in Chief John J. Pershing, he was very proud of that. The letter was dated France February 28, 1919. When he was younger, he raised beef cattle. He enjoyed gardening and had a huge garden that family and friends benefitted from. He loved to go fishing and hunting with family and friends and he shot a buck that qualified him to be in the Boone and Crockett book. He was happy about that, the deer scored net 160 1/8 shot in 1970, Sawyer County, WI. His other love was any sports relating to Wisconsin, especially the Packers, Brewers and the Badgers. If you ever watched a game with him, he was quite serious; he yelled when they messed up or were losing, and cheered when they were playing great football and louder when they won. Through the years he loved his dogs and spoiled every one of them. His last dog was named Packer. He also loved to play cards, Buck Euchre, Five Hundred, Smear, and his favorite was Cribbage. He could count cards faster than anyone. For the last almost seven years he resided at The Deerfield, where he was well loved and cared for by the entire staff. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Norman P. Nelson. He is survived by his Godchild/cousin Diane Bulman, cousins and friends. Per his request and wishes there will be no funeral. A private burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery in Star Prairie, WI in the spring. Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

“Buddy” was a long time family friend of the LaMoyne and Eva Halvorson family. He loved the Cubs, Brewers and the Packers. He hunted and fished with LaMoyne for several years.Deer hunting time, Eva would make 12 loaves of homemade bread, Cinnamon rolls/Carmel rolls which were his favorite, boxed them and sent them up to “Camp Gordon”. He played “500” with Jon Halvorson, Grace Bentley and Yvonne Brotzler. This was annual event for several years. He was quiet but very kind hearted and lived for many years across from Cedar Lake Speedway. The Soderquist family took great care of Buddy, especially in his later years. I imagine him and LaMoyne are ice fishing right now. I am sorry for your loss but he left behind some great memories. For me, I remember Buddy introducing me to a “Pineapple Malt from the Dairy Queen, unusual combo, but it was good! Happy Trails Buddy!.
