Scot was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 16, 1964. He passed away unexpectedly, from a heart attack, at his home on December 19, 2025. He was 61 years old.
Scot grew up in Omaha, where he attended St. Cecilia Elementary School, Cathedral High School, and graduated from Ralston High School in 1982.
As a youngster Scot enjoyed riding his bicycle all over Omaha. Scot was very involved in Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout in September 1980 and Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow. He became a licensed Extra Class Amateur Radio operator (WBØWOT), a skill he utilized as a storm spotter with SKYWARN. He also enjoyed scuba diving and line repelling.
Upon his high school graduation, Scot joined the United States Army. He was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He served as a UH-60 Helicopter Crew Chief with the 1/17th CAV in 1983 during Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada). Upon leaving the military, he attended Iowa Western Community College and received an A & P (Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic) certification .
Scot then moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he worked for the United States Customs Air Interdiction Team. During this time, Scot met his wife, Sara Bartlett. They were married on October 7, 1989, in the Lifelink III S-76 helicopter, while it flew over the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Scot was employed as a helicopter mechanic for Lifelink III and North Air Care. In 1990, Scot and Sara moved to their home in Beldenville, Wisconsin.
During Operation Desert Storm (1991), Scot was private contractor with Aeromaritime, who provided support to the United States military. He was based in Saudi Arabia where his work centered on crash investigation and aircraft engine maintenance. He then returned to working with Lifelink III. Scot ultimately became an Investigator with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). His career spanned 30 years, in which he performed certification and surveillance of Air Carriers and Repair Stations. His additional duties included enforcement of FAA regulations and investigation of aircraft accidents.
Scot and Sara were blessed with two sons, Sean and Ryan. Scot was extremely proud of them and all of their accomplishments. In particular, both young men are graduates of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and officers in the Navy Reserve.
He will be forever in the hearts of Sara, his loving wife of 36 years and sons, Sean and Ryan. He is also forever in the hearts of his parents James (Eddie) Thompson and Jacqueline (Jackie) DeVoe. In addition, he is forever in the hearts of his siblings Lynn Thompson (Mary), Donna Thompson (Ron), Mark Thompson (Sandy) and brother-in-law Steven (Robin) Bartlett. Also left to cherish his memory are many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Iola Bartlett.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 from 12:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m., at Bakken-Young Funeral Home in River Falls, Wisconsin. A Celebration of Life Service will be held immediately after the visitation at 2:00 p.m. Following the service Military Honors will be held to conclude the services. Oh Thompson family, so sorry for your sudden loss. Condolences to the entire family. I’ve know Scot for almost two years on the FAA Cert team. He was so knowledgeable in his work and didn’t mind sharing when asked. I will miss his uplifting (dad) jokes that should have had a sting drum sequence (ba dum ‘tis) at the end. I am thankful for having the opportunity to work with him and will miss him.
Scott will always bring a smile and a funny comment to my memory. No words help only know much we feel your loss.

So sorry to hear of your loss Sara. I spoke with Scot on the Menomonie repeater a few weeks ago and I’m so glad we had that last chance to connect. I’ll always remember him telling me where he was from after asking him when we first met… “the cultural center of the universe of course, Omaha, Nebraska.” He will be missed by all his ham radio friends.
