Lois Schurke 10/14/2013

Lois Margaret Schurke, 92, of Minneapolis, died October 14 while in hospice care at Arthur-Rose Home, New Richmond, WI. She was born to Edward and Kamilla Knutson, September 28, 1921, in Minneapolis. Lois attended Bancroft Elementary School and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938.  In 1942, she married G. Roger Schurke. They lived in Minneapolis and raised six children.  At age 50, Lois graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota with her BS in Elementary Education.


Lois was a homemaker and an avid reader who enjoyed painting, music, arts and the out-of-doors.  She was particularly fond of time spent at the family’s Apple River property near Somerset, WI. She enjoyed attending events featuring her many grand or great grand children and she treasured her close friendship with Becca Craft.  Lois and Roger valued service to others and volunteered time for local food shelves as well as at a Mexican orphanage.
  
Lois was a member of Twin City Fellowship Church, active with the Southwest Senior Center and served on the Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association Board.

 

Lois is survived by five children: Roger and Merryl Schurke, Andover, MN; daughter-in-law Vicki Grooters; Lynn and Nile Merseth, New Richmond, WI; Paul and Susan Schurke, Ely, MN; John Schurke and Sara Blasing, Richfield, MN; Joel and Cheryl Peterson-Schurke, St. Paul, MN. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren and twenty two great-grandchildren.  Lois was preceded in death by her husband Roger, 1999, son Mark,1984, and great-grandson Nicholas, 2008.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requests that donations be made to Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge,1619 Portland Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55404.


Visitation was held 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 19 at the familys Apple River property (1976 Night Hawk Dr, Somerset) followed by 11:30 funeral, 12:45 interment was at Oakland Cemetery, Star Prairie, WI, and 1-3 pm luncheon social at the Laurel Supper Club, 105 Hwy 64, New Richmond, WI.  In event of inclement weather, visitation and funeral will be held at Bakken Young Funeral Services, 112 W. 3rd Street, New Richmond, WI  54017 (715)-246-2154.  Lois church, Twin City Fellowship, will be dedicating its Sunday, November 24 service to Lois’ memory and her 40 year commitment to TCF. Family members will be attending this event which begins with a 10 a.m. breakfast social.
