John Douglas “Doug” Mountain, age 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 18, 2026 at St. Croix Health and Rehab in New Richmond, Wisconsin.

Born on June 2, 1936, Doug grew up in Ellsworth, Wisconsin and graduated as Valedictorian of Ellsworth High School’s class of 1954. He went on to obtain his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin River Falls and his Master’s degree from the University of Oregon and was well on his way to his PhD.  Doug spent his professional life dedicated to education as a professor of mathematics at Lakewood, now Century College, where he met his future wife, Helen Bemis. They began a partnership that would span more than five decades when they married on April 19, 1975 and created a home in River Falls, Wisconsin with their four children.

Together, they created a life filled with adventure, enjoying many travels out west and spending time at the family cabin in Spooner, Wisconsin. Many stories will be remembered about adventures fishing, hunting, motorcycle and convertible rides, and anything that allowed them to share the outdoors together.

Doug loved watching basketball and was a devout Green Bay Packers fan.  He especially enjoyed time outdoors cutting and splitting wood. Doug’s gentle spirit and caring heart touched many lives, and he will be greatly missed.
