John Cooke 01/19/2026

John Willard Cooke, age 69, of New Richmond, WI, passed away on January 19, 2026, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN, due to complications from quadriplegia. John was born on November 20, 1956, in Bay City, MI, to Cynthia Nemetz and William Cooke. He grew up in Jackson, MI, and later moved to Wisconsin, where he found not only work but also the love of his life, Stephanie.

John and Stephanie’s journey together began with their marriage on November 11, 1994, in a heartwarming ceremony officiated by a Justice of the Peace at the home of Barb Polfus in New Richmond. Their shared love for family, adventure, and the great outdoors brought them even closer, as they enjoyed countless family gatherings at the pumpkin patch and Christmas tree farm, as well as camping trips that fostered memories that will forever be cherished.

An avid craftsman, John found joy in woodworking—often sneaking in new, high-quality tools that he lovingly hid from Stephanie. His passion extended to canoe trips, the thrill of hunting, riding motorcycles, golfing, grilling, and birdwatching, wherein his backyard was adorned with bird feeders and a special spot just for the squirrels. John also delighted in playing Scrabble and piecing together jigsaw puzzles, often challenging family members to share in these quiet yet joyful moments.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Stephanie; his beloved children, Josanna (Steve) Youngblom, Christopher (Abby) French, Jeremy (Kori) French, Ellisa (Bradley) Wilbur, Landon (Taylor) Cooke, and Brianna (Derik) Thibodeau; as well as 20 treasured grandchildren, who were the light of his life. John also leaves behind his sisters, Jane (Jack) Christensen and Anne (Rob) Barrette, along with one niece and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his dear nephew, Jack Christensen.

A memorial gathering will be held in John’s honor at Bakken-Young Funeral and Cremation Services, located at 728 S Knowles Ave in New Richmond, on February 28, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate John’s life, share stories, and reflect on the many ways he touched our hearts.
