Herbert Gust 08/21/2023

Herbert E. Gust, age 80, of Hudson, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 21, 2023, at St. Croix Health Center in New Richmond, Wisconsin, surrounded by his family.  Herb was born in Amery, Wisconsin to Herbert and Evelyn Gust on November 11, 1942.  After graduating from New Richmond High School in 1960, he attended 2 years at St. Olaf College before enlisting in the United Stated Air Force. He served 4 years, stateside, as a medic during the Vietnam war.

Upon his return home, Herb held a variety of jobs.  He had an entrepreneurial spirit that guided him to many adventures all over the US and Mexico.  Herb’s inquiring mind led him from painting houses, to landscaping and to doing general construction work.  While working at 3M, Herb was project manager for getting the first of its kind artificial turf, called Tartan Turf, installed all around the country.  He held a real estate brokers license in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Arizona.  At one point he and his family purchased the general store in Deer Park.

Herb met Sandy Gehrmann when he was in 8th grade and Sandy in 6th.  He would walk Sandy home from the community pool every single day during the summer.  Though they never married, Herb and Sandy held a beautiful and incredibly meaningful commitment ceremony on August 12, 2023.  Sandy’s children had a special spot in Herb’s heart and he absolutely loved being a part of their lives and activities.   He was a kind and humble man and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Survived by his sister, Annie Gust (Gary L. Ferguson); his loving partner, Sandy Gehrmann; Sandy’s children, Mike (Carson Kreitzer) Kittel, Kathy Kittel and Kris Thomas; Sandy’s grandchildren, Alisha (Ben), Liz (Lucas), Shane (Taylor), Rachel, Jacob and Josh; and Sandy’s five great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Evelyn.

Private family services are being planned for a later date.  Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

Sandy, I am so sorry to read about Herb’s passing. I know how close you two were and how much you both meant to each other. What a lovely picture of him in the obituary.
