Harriet Jeanette Vrieze age 92 of Baldwin died Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Baldwin Care Center. She was born the daughter of John and Josephine (Flipse) Bosman on January 31, 1919 in Roberts. On June 29, 1938, she married Merton E. Vrieze at his brother, Laurence Vrieze’s farm. Merton and Harriet farmed north of Baldwin. Harriet was a long time member of the Baldwin Christian Reformed Church, actively involved in the Dorcas Ladies Aid, teaching Sunday school and starting a neighborhood Bible Study. She also belonged to the Baldwin Hospital Auxiliary and was a 4-H leader for 20 years. She was a master at food preservation and was a judge at the Minnesota State Fair. Harriet enjoyed her rose and flower gardens and her house was full of plants which was a witness to her green thumb. Harriet was also a great hostess and frequently shared her baked goods with friends and neighbors. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merton; son, Leon Merton; sister, Frances Ferg; brothers-in-law, Edwin Ferg and Kenneth Wernlund. Harriet is survived by her children, Mary (Dick) Zachman of Denver, CO, June (Dean) Doornink of Baldwin, Eldon (Nancy Jo) Vrieze of Rice Lake, Faye (John) Steffen of Glenwood City; grandchildren, Kurt VanSomeren, Nancy VanSomeren, Jim VanSomeren, Chris VanSomeren, Todd Doornink, Tami Martin, Heidi Wilker, Mark Vrieze, Amy Jo Vrieze, Angie LaBonne, Abbey Steffen, Aric Steffen; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Wernlund; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral service was held Monday, August 15, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Baldwin Christian Reformed Church. Visitation was Sunday, August 14, 2011 from 5-8 pm at Bakken-Young Funeral Home in Baldwin and on Monday from 10-11 am before the service at the church. The interment was in the Baldwin Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Baldwin Christian School or the Dorcas Ladies Aid. Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services of Baldwin.
