Glenn L. Applegate, MD

February 24th, 1965 — May 4th, 2025.

Dr. Glenn Applegate was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 24th, 1965 to Frank and Helen (Hoholek) Applegate. He was the youngest of their three children. The family moved to Oklahoma while Glenn was in elementary school and then onto Florida where he graduated from Lakeland High School in 1983 as salutatorian. He attended the University of Florida, Gainesville and graduated with his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1989 with high honors and was inducted into the Rho Chi Society, the honor society for pharmacists. He entered Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL the same year and graduated in 1993 with honors and induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society as well. He did his radiation oncology residency at Northwestern Hospital and served as chief resident the final year,1997.

Before starting his career with MRO and the Cancer Center of Western Wisconsin/CCWW in 2012 in New Richmond, WI, Glenn worked in Pennsylvania, and then in Wisconsin including Milwaukee, and Madison. He always made lasting connections and friendships with his fellow radiation oncologists and the staff/team. He felt privileged to be able to work at the CCWW in New Richmond where he could deliver excellent care locally so that it was easier on the patients and their families. He thought about his patients and their care seven days a week.

Besides his career in medicine, Glenn had an insatiable desire to keep learning. He studied/played piano and enjoyed concerts and classical music. He had a love for automobiles dating to his childhood and he could talk to anyone about them in detail. He was always looking for the next vehicle. He also loved European history, languages and religion and his library of books on those subjects. He enjoyed gardening, loved his pets, cameras, and travelling with friends and family. He valued his life long friendships. His most recent accomplishment was getting his certification as a ham radio operator.

Glenn’s Catholic faith was central to how he lived his life. He served as a eucharistic minister and looked forward to visiting new churches when travelling and going to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe every year. He was a proud member of St. Anne Church in Somerset and supported its mission and school. He felt welcomed. After his diagnosis, he offered any suffering/pain up to God.

He was preceded in death by his mother Helen Applegate; his love and devotion towards her never ended. Also preceded in death by Joyce Hecht, with whom he had a special bond and friendship.

Glenn is survived by his partner, Anthony Hecht. They shared their Catholic faith, love of music, medical careers, travel and spending time together.

He is also survived by his father Frank Applegate, brother Ken (Jean) Applegate and their children Shane (Lauren) Applegate and Kallie Applegate, sister Patricia (Patrick) Barnes and their children Erin (Austin) Barnes Brown and Blake (Elizabeth) Barnes. Survived by 4 grandnieces, numerous cousins, and uncle Fred (Louise) Applegate. Also survived and missed by the Hecht family, Suzanne (Charles) Frazier, Gerald (Terri) Hecht, Robert (Carol) Hecht, Constance (Rick) Hecht, Maureen (Wes) Klatt, Lawrence (Sandi) Hecht and numerous nephews and nieces.

Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 3 pm on Friday May 16, 2025 with Rev. Joseph Madanu and Rev. John Anderson co-officiating at St. Anne Catholic Church (141 Church Hill Road) in Somerset. Visitation at the church starting at 1 pm and interment at the St. Anne Church cemetery immediately following the mass. Meal and fellowship to follow the interment at St. Anne Church hall.

The family is grateful for all the doctors/caregivers that were part of Glenn’s journey and treatments. He was overwhelmed by how much people cared and the kindness shown to him at Westfields Hospital and the CCWW.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Anne School endowment, the CCWW, or a charity important to the donor.
