Gladys Mae Browne, affectionately known as “Chili,” passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, at the age of 99. Born on November 2, 1926, in Arkansaw, Wisconsin, her journey through life was filled with love, laughter, and a spirit that touched everyone around her.
Chili was raised on her family’s dairy farm, where she learned the values of hard work and community. After completing high school, she ventured to the Twin Cities to pursue her passion for beauty as a cosmetologist, sharing her talent with so many. It was there that she met the love of her life, Robert S. Browne. The couple married on July 20, 1947, in Spring Valley, and together they built a beautiful family, welcoming four children into their lives.
In 1956, the Browne family made River Falls their home, where Chili became an active member of Ezekiel Lutheran Church. Her deep faith and love for community led her to form lasting connections that would bring her joy throughout her life. Chili enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, and immersing herself in the world of books. Her creative spirit flourished in her crafting—whether knitting, crocheting, sewing, or working with ceramics, she always found ways to express her love and hospitality.
Retirement offered Chili the opportunity to further enjoy life, especially as she and Robert spent part of their winters in Texas, soaking up the warmth and making beautiful memories together.
Chili is survived by daughter, Paula Ganzow (Scott) of San Diego, CA; son, Roger of River Falls, WI; and son, Steven of Shell Lake, WI; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert, her daughter Kathy, and many siblings, including nine brothers and seven sisters.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026 beginning with a time to gather at 3:00 pm followed by memorial service at 3:30 pm at Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services (805 E Division St.) in River Falls. A reception and light meal will be immediately following the service. Interment will be in Kinnickinnic Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Robert.
Chili was a bright light in all our lives, and her memory will continue to shine through her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in peace.
Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

I fondly remember Chili as our “Avon Lady”, visiting our kitchen for coffee often. She would kindly give me sample lipsticks that she thought were the best color for a teenager and offering samples of wonderful scents.
I met Chilli in 2012 when I showed up at her door to inquire about her home. She asked me in and said she was actually thinking about selling it and she showed me around a little. I instantly liked her, and felt comfortable. The next spring when our house was sold I asked her if she was still interested in selling and she said”If someone named Becky wanted to buy it, it was for sale.” She said that because she had fallen around Christmas and broke a bone in her leg. But sell it to me mainly because we wanted to buy it so that my 70 year old Mom and 51 year old para-plegic brother could live with us. That home was, and still is a blessing for us, and we are thankful that she chose to allow us the opportunity to be able to share it with the people we loved. She was a remarkable woman and I am sure that she heard the words “ well done, good and faithful servant.”
