Gary Carlson 03/17/2011

Gary L. Carlson, born in Red Wing on Oct. 14, 1937 to Laverne and Violet Carlson, died March 17, 2011 in New Richmond, Wisc.  Mr. Carlson graduated from Red Wing High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Minnesota in 1959, and received a regular commission in the U.S. Navy upon graduation.  He married Priscilla Sethre in 1960 at St. Joseph Church in Red Wing, and they had three children, Grant, Caron and Seth.   Mr. Carlson will be remembered as an intensely independent man of unwavering principle and many talents.  He is survived by Priscilla, Caron and Seth, as well as his daughter-in-law Catherine Carlson, granddaughter Elle Carlson, son-in-law Paul Kirby, grandson Benjamin Kirby, his sister LuAnne Olson, and several nieces and nephews.  Memorials may be sent to the Grant G. Carlson Art Award scholarship fund at the University of New Hampshire, Elliott Alumni Center, 9 Edgewood Rd., Durham, NH  03824-1934.  Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services of New Richmond.
