Dennis Johnson 01/15/2024

Dennis (Denny) Lee Johnson, age 86, passed away on January 15, 2024 at his home in New Richmond, WI. Denny was born February 4, 1937 in Spirit, WI to Lawrence and Mildred (Scheller) Johnson. He went to Rib Lake High School and then on to a year at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where he pursued studies to become a band director. He then moved to Chicago seeking employment, and later relocated to Minneapolis where he met his future wife, Kathleen (Elliott) Johnson. He subsequently managed several Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in the Twin Cities area, and was taught by Col. Harland Sanders himself how to pressure cook the colonel’s special recipe for fried chicken.

In 1970, an opportunity arose to buy LaNou’s Restaurant – and later the Uptown Restaurant – in Tomahawk, WI, which Denny and Kathy ran for nine years. In 1975 they moved into their newly built home on the very land where Denny was born, and which his grandfather, Amandus Johnson of Sweden, homesteaded the 160 acres granted him in return for developing the land. In 1979, Denny went into farming, utilizing the original barn and outbuildings constructed on the homestead. After his short-lived farming adventure during the farm crisis of the early 80’s, Denny applied his business skills and creative talents by remodeling and opening a craft mall that Kathy managed, as well as the bar next door that he managed. Being a naturally gifted and generous teacher, Denny worked for Lincoln Hills School and NCTI, teaching teenage and even blind students about food preparation. With all of his food service industry experience, he was hired to run the Tomahawk Elementary, Junior, and Senior High School lunch programs. When their two grandchildren, Emily and Hannah, were born, Denny and Kathy decided to relocate to New Richmond, WI to be near them, and where they would live out their remaining years.

While living in New Richmond, Denny offered his handyman talents as a maintenance man at two hotels in Hudson, WI, as well as townhomes in New Richmond. He also volunteered his talents at the New Richmond Heritage Center where Denny did a wide variety of tasks in addition to being a docent for field trips, including his daughter Heidi’s first, second, and third grade classes over the years. As a STEP worker he helped students in Heidi’s classroom, and even used his musical talents to write and record a song for one of her class’s musicals. Denny loved watching all his wild animal ‘friends’ that would visit daily to eat the treats he provided. He was an avid card and cribbage player who was hard to beat! Denny was a self-taught painter and could play the piano by ear. He loved entertaining friends and family with his great cooking, and enjoyed spending time at his cabin and boating on Lake Nokomis near Tomahawk, WI. In short, Denny was a loving, generous, and kind hearted man of SO many talents!

Denny is survived by his two children – Lawrence Johnson of Cedar City, UT and Heidi Johnson (Mark) Weyer of Stillwater, MN. He is further survived by his two grandchildren – Emily Swetlik of Woodville, WI and Hannah Swetlik of Chicago, IL; his siblings – Gordon Johnson of Appleton, WI, and Kenneth (Theresa) Johnson of Spirit, WI; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Denny is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother, Eugene Johnson, and sister, Janet Kring Schopper.

Celebration of Life services were held at Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services 728 S Knowles Avenue New Richmond, WI on January 20th at 2pm with visitation at 1pm and refreshments following the service and Spirit United Methodist Church 86 & W Knox Road Omega, WI January 21st at 2pm with visitation at 1pm and refreshments following the service.  Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

I will miss Denny so much. He was the last connection I had with my eldest brother, Ken. Rest in peace, Denny. I’ll stop sending the jokes, now. You told me many times how much you enjoyed them.

I experienced Denny’s fondness for teaching and helping others, as he became my first boss at Delaria’s KFC in Mpls. What a kind and generous man he was with many talents who’s impact reached so many people. He will be sadly missed and loved by all.

    Larry, Heidi and Family,

We were greatly saddened by the news of cousin Denny’s passing.
We had been very much looking forward to visiting him during our next trip east to the Twin Cities area.
He was always a delight to spend time with and I have very fond memories of our visits in recent years when he took me to the cabin and showed me his family’s homestead and the businesses he and Kathy built.
He and Kathy always remained close to our family.
I’ll not forget how surprised we all were, celebrating our mom & dad’s 60th anniversary in Nampa Idaho to unexpectedly have Denny & Kathy show up having driven 1,500 miles to be there to help mark the occasion.
Denny was a very kind ‘one of a kind’, a gentle soul with a great sense of humor and a good story teller who will always be remembered fondly.

So sorry to hear this. I will keep you in my prayers, Heidi, Larry, and family. I have fond memories of playing together while our parents visited! I have one of Denny’s paintings that he had gifted to my grandparents. He was a very talented and kind man.

Dear Larry, Heidi and family members,
Although I wont be able to join you, my thoughts and prayers will be with you as you celebrate your dad’s life well lived!
As you know and others have mentioned, I knew him to be a good, kind, helpful, giving and loving man.
He gave me my 1st job in Minneapolis at Delaria’s KFC and he and Kathy gave me a place to stay until I could get my feet under me and found an apartment.
He and Kathy always made time to attend every celebrated event in our family. As Bob mentioned, he even drove 1500 miles to surprise the folks on their 60th.
I always loved listening to him play the piano.
He was more than a cousin, he was a friend and he will be missed.

    Dear Larry, Heidi, and Family,
I’m sorry I’m unable to attend your Dad’s memorial service but my sons, Jim & Jeff, plan on attending. Thank you for providing the live feed so we can “still attend”.
As I’ve been pondering over the years that I’ve known your Dad, it takes little to make me smile, as I think about the impact he made in my life! One of my earliest recollections, is after our eldest sister Joy’s passing, Denny & Kathy would visit, helping ease my parents, my siblings and my grief. As a small, six year old child, I remember it well, and looked forward to those visits!
Another memory I have, is when my parents and I went to visit & spent the night with your parents in their home in Tomahawk, where Denny provided fresh maple syrup for the blueberry pancakes & waffles Kathy made us for breakfast.
Denny, your giving heart and the love & joy you brought to those who were blessed enough to have met you will be:
    “Always Remembered, Never Forgotten!”

(Continuation ) your Dad and I really enjoyed our vists. In I believe 2014 Your Father gave me his old 1956 Wurlitzer Jukebox that in 1970 your folks had retrieved out of their old Resturant/bar (in Tomahawk as I recall) I returned home with it and with alot of reading and research I was able to figure out what made it tick and made it play beautiful music again and it’s a constant reminder of his giving heart . In I believe 2022 Penny and I were able to meet up with him in Tomahawk and he shared the beautiful cabin and for the first time I was able to have a one on one fishing day with him while Penny was able to take in and enjoy the view of the lake from a lawn chair with a good book Later that evening he show me how to properly get beat a cribbage LOL and treated us to a beautiful dinner at one of his favorite secluded resturants. He was truly a loving, giving and delightful man and will be missed.

    Heidi, Denny and Family,
Today’s service was a beautiful tribute to your father and you and your family are the legacy he and your mother have left behind. While remembering Denny a saying I’ve heard before came to mind “ People may forget what you said and people may forget what you’ve done, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” For me I will never forget the warmth, love and kindness that I felt whenever I was with your Father and Mother. I feel blessed to be able to call them family. My love and prayers are with you and will continue to be so.
    Your Cousin, Nancy Todd

Larry and Heidi, Sue and I offer our deepest condolences. I worked for Denny right after he bought the restaurant from Dad. And then bought it from him in 1979. We go back a long time. We became friends on FB awhile back. This past fall we had several conversations. It was an enjoyable time. Your father was one of the good ones. Our thoughts and prayer for you.
