Daniel P. Powers “Coach,” 89, of New Richmond, passed away on September 23, 2025.
A lifelong mentor and coach, Daniel found his greatest joy on the football field, where he dedicated himself to guiding and inspiring young men. Known for his passion for the game, his firm yet caring guidance, and his ability to motivate, he shaped the lives of countless players both on and off the field. For him, football was never just about wins and losses—it was about building character, teamwork, and resilience that carried into every aspect of life.
Daniel was a proud member of the 1960 University of Minnesota National Championship football team. He went on to earn both his Bachelor of Education and Master of Education degrees from the University of Minnesota.
Daniel honorably served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps.
Beyond coaching, Daniel was equally devoted to his other passion: English Bulldogs. A respected breeder, owner, and handler, he was admired for his knowledge, skill, and love for the breed. He took great pride in raising and showing Bulldogs, and through this work built lifelong friendships within the dog community. His legacy of dedication, care, and camaraderie left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Daniel was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marybeth “Toni” Powers; his parents, Robert and Norah Powers; and his brothers, Tom, Bob, and Jimmy Powers.
He is survived by his children, Robert Powers and Cathy (Terry) Montpetit; his grandchildren, Amanda (Tony) Tonkin, Danielle Montpetit, and Madeline Montpetit; and his great-grandchildren, Chase, Channing, and Scarlett Tonkin. He is also survived by his beloved Bulldog, Annie.
Private interment will be in Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery. A celebration of life for Daniel and Mary Powers will be held at a later date. Arrangements are pending with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

Dan was our football coach my sophomore and junior years at Ellsworth HS. I believe that was his first coaching position. He was passionate and a hard charger and had us in the best shape of our lives. He was easily the best coach I ever had. I tried to locate him to invite him to our 60th class reunion last year. I had no idea he was in New Richmond. Nuts! My condolences to his children and grandchildren. You lost a gem.
Dan was a great neighbor! Always gave a wave, a thumbs up or would stop for a few words. He was proud and concerned about his neighborhood. Safety was important to him such as to remind walkers to walk on the left side of the street. Dan took great pride in caring for his home and yard. We will miss his smile, his support and his friendship.
