Betty Lee (Backman) Knutson of River Falls, Wisconsin, was born on November 1, 1934, and passed away on August 18, 2026.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse, volunteer, and friend. She is survived by her husband, Charles D. Knutson; her four children, Mark (Claudia), Scott (Jackie), Karen (Greg), and Kristin (Aaron); 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews; and many cherished members of the extended Knutson family.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Bessie Backman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; her parents-in-law, Ray and Gladys Knutson; her sister, Bonnie Krochock, and Bonnie’s husband, David; and her brother-in-law, Tom Knutson.
A registered nurse, Betty devoted her professional life to caring for others and concluded her career with the St. Paul Companies. Her compassion extended well beyond her work. She generously volunteered through Servant of the Shepherd Church and at Our House Senior Living, always looking for ways to help and care for those around her.
Betty was an exceptionally talented knitter and seamstress whose work often earned awards. Yet the recognition she treasured most came from lovingly creating gifts for family and friends—and from seeing those gifts worn and enjoyed. Every stitch was an expression of her creativity, generosity, and love.
Throughout her life, Betty enjoyed dancing and participating in groups such as Music Madams and Bridge Club. She was also a devoted rescuer of cats and dogs who opened her heart and home to animals in need and doted on her beloved fur babies.
Betty’s faith was central to her life. She prayed daily and had a deep and abiding relationship with God. Thoughtful and reflective, she considered the impact her life had on others and shared letters and stories with her children in the hope that her experiences and life lessons would live on through them. These words are a treasured part of the legacy she leaves behind.
Above all, Betty will be remembered for the many ways she cared for others. Whether she was nursing, volunteering, rescuing an animal, creating a handmade treasure, sharing her wisdom, or spending time with her family, Betty gave generously of herself. Her love lives on in the family she cherished, the people she helped, and the beautiful gifts and lessons she left behind. Her family is comforted knowing that Betty is at peace and resting in the loving arms of Jesus.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Servant of the Shepherd Church in River Falls. Visitation will begin one hour before the service. A luncheon will be served at the church following the service, with burial afterward in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Betty’s honor to Servant of the Shepherd Church, the Alzheimer’s Association, or your local animal rescue organization. Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services is assisting the family.
