Bernard “Bernie” Abrahamson (1936-2026)
Bernard Allen Abrahamson, 89, of River Falls, WI, died peacefully at the Hudson Hospital, Hudson, WI on Sunday, May 3rd.
Born in Fairchild, WI on September 1,1936 to Roy and Dorothy Abrahamson. The youngest son of seven boys along with two younger sisters, he grew up and attended primary through high school in Fairchild, WI. Bernie also first met the love of his life, Peggy Primus while attending school together in Fairchild. Bernie and his brothers were very active in the Family coal business in Fairchild as well as local athletics, especially basketball, including a family travel team with his six brothers and coached by their dad, Roy. Bernie (and Peggy) both went on to attend UW Eau Claire to pursue each other and degrees in education while he played basketball for the Blugolds with Peggy courtside as a Blugold Cheerleader. He was married to Peggy on August 10,1957 and went on to have four beautiful daughters (Kelly, Kim, Kris & Kari). Bernie joined the US Army shortly after marriage, first stationed in Missouri and later stationed in Spokane, WA with both Peggy and young Kelly in tow. After completing his time in the Army, Bernie and his young family returned to Wisconsin, where he transitioned to serving in the Army National Guard, began to grow their family and teach in several communities including Gilman, Spring Valley and finally River Falls. During this time he also attended Winona State University to obtain a Master of Administration and Counseling. He was active in the Lions Club, American Legion and VFW along with multiple roles in the River Falls School District including Guidance Counselor, Assistant Superintendent and Interim Superintendent on several occasions. Bernie maintained his interests in sports by coaching, officiating and as an avid sports fan with all things Badgers, Packers and Brewers. When he was able, annual trips to the boys state basketball tournament in Madison with a stop at Mickies were a must. Aside from his family, and grandchildren in particular, several of his proudest achievements included facilitating the creation of the River Falls Veterans Memorial and publishing five books in his “retirement”. Bernie loved being active and outside spending countless hours and effort building landscape projects including water features, agrarian structures, often with a nod to his Fairchild years, planting large gardens, maintaining a pristine yard, raising pheasants and several horses on the wooded acreage surrounding their house with a tireless work ethic. Some of the best times he had was sharing all of this with his grandchildren, especially taking them on sleigh and buggy rides drawn by ‘Candyman’ and ‘Major’. He also took great joy in attending as many of his grandchildren’s events and activities as possible. Late in his life, he would relish drives through the county side, checking out the horse farms, spotting wildlife and wrapping it up with two scoops of Culver’s vanilla custard.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Dorothy, siblings Leonard, Edwin, Gerald, Charles, Alvin, Lyle & Carol (Anason) along with his wife Peggy and daughter, Kris. He is survived by his sister, Susie Janke, daughters Kelly (& Paul Cuta), Kim (& Dave Anderson), Kari (& Fernando Flores) and six grandchildren – Carley (Cuta & Jonathan Rooney), Lexi Cuta, Loghan & Janse Anderson and Hunter & Walker Flores.
A funeral service was held at the Bakken Young Funeral Home in River Falls, WI on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11 am and with a visitation before, beginning at 10 am. Interment wad in Greenwood Cemetery with full military honors performed by American Legion Post #121 Honor Guard. Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

Thank-You Sarah for your condolences, we appreciate it.
Just so you know Bernie and Nancy did divorce 7 years ago.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of Uncle Bernie and Aunt Peggy growing up. I always looked forward to your family coming to visit Grandpa and Grandma Primus in Fairchild, as I would usually get to see you all. I remember Uncle Bernie and Uncle Joe lugging in a great big box for Grandma to open as a gift. She opened it up and inside was a clothes line with hangers. They told her it was a solar clothes dryer. Everyone laughed hysterically. Uncle Bernie was kind, hardworking, and just a great guy. May he rest in peace. I will keep Uncle Bernie and your family in my prayers. Love to you all.
My deepest condolences to Kim, Kelly, Kari and their families at loss of their father and grand-father. Bernie lived a diversified and full life and his final journey will again reunite him with his first love Peggy.
Healing prayers to those left behind.
Bernie was fresh out of college in his first teaching position in Gilman where his tireless sense of humor carried him through the constant assaults and disruptions our class of 49 juniors inflicted on his attempts to impart some modicum of wisdom and maturity on our meandering minds there in government studies. We celebrated the birth of a daughter… Kris or maybe Kelly… by dressing Dave Nordan in a diaper and baby bonnet as Dave Anderson wheeled him into class, legs dangling over the front of the wheelbarrow. And we frustrated the first-year fantasy of every novice coach: to have a winning season the inaugural year. Instead, our gang of training rule-defying party-players delivered, to many of Bernie’s frustrated sighs, the conference five-man doormat. But we were resilient and dwelt not on our shortcomings, but rather on his faith in us as individuals. Bernie, you’re ever a bright, formative force in my aimless teenage years.
Bernie was kind, hardworking and had a great sense oh humor! I loved him. May he rest in peace.
Bernie was a champion for children. He was tireless in his continual pursuit of how the RF schools could provide the best learning environment for EACH child. He was a wonderful colleague and the epitome of professionalism.
Bernie was a constant, enduring advocate for the River Falls School Forest as a public place where everyone could wander, explore, and maybe learn something. His enduring passion and focus was on education. He believed that, when children were taught about nature while physically present IN nature, they would learn a way to see the world; a way to see the world that formed the foundation that would support and guide their beliefs and actions long after they left the River Falls School District.
I had the privilege of working with Bernie on the River Falls Board of Education and considered him a lasting and dear friend. He embraced me and my family – not as an additional father or grandfather, but as someone who was kind, interested as well as interesting. He made my 4 daughters feel welcome whenever and wherever he saw them – he truly did care. He will be missed, but more importantly, he is and will be lovingly remembered.
My mother who is 91 went to school with Bernie…. We reconnected in River falls last year… And visited him several times.. they sang the Fairchild ” purple dragon ” theme song together.. talked on the phone when I would call him.. Bernie was an outstanding man in Fairchild with endless stories. Of course… We are sorry for your loss of a great human 🇺🇸. Always so gentle and kind.
Kathy (Dado) Dusek here with husband Jeff sending our sympathy to your family. I have very fond memories growing up in Wasson Lane with all of Bernie’s daughters swimming in the pool and playing all summer long. He was a very special guy. One of the best.
(((Hugs))) and condolences to Kim, Kelly, Kari and their families at loss of their father and grampa. Keep the memories close. Tell his stories along with your mom’s even when tears flow.
Love ya, Gwen (deJong)
We are so sorry for your loss! I know my mom and dad (Ethel and Russ Gettinger) thought very highly of him and your mom. So interesting to read about all of his out of school accomplishments too.

Mr. Abrahamson was the best. I love this family that Bernie and Mrs. Abrahamson built and shared with our community of River Falls. I’m so sorry for the loss of your dad girls, but please know your dad will always be with us and sharing his love. I’m sure Peg and Kris were right there at the doors of heaven waiting for him. Stay Strong and God Bless.
Kim, I am so sorry for your loss. Sending love to you and your family during this difficult time. ❤️🙏❤️
Bernie was very special person to me. He was my hero in high school 💔
Kelly (and Paul), sincere condolences on the loss of your dad. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Kelly, Kim and Kari – you and your families have my condolences. It is with fond rememberance that I think of all the sleep overs where Kris and many of us girls stayed up all night doing all sort of shenanigans. I can’t imagine that your dad and mom weren’t also up all night listening to the commotion. Mr. Abrahamson had a kind heart and a passion for his family and all children, May beautiful memories see you through this difficult time.
Bernie will be missed great man. We had coffee once in awhile talked the old days he loved driving by my place checking out the horses. Actually for you who know me I probably spent more time with Bernie than my teachers. God bless my friend 🙏🙏
So sorry to hear of the passing of Bernie. He and my mother Sylvia King Bluem attended Fairchild High School together and kept in touch through their class reunions, etc. Mom always admired Bernie for his work ethic, intelligence, community involvement and all-around good human. As a River Falls parent, I was honored to also know Bernie through his involvement with education. Prayers and blessings to your families.
Bernie hired me in 1983 to teach special education at RFJH. I stayed for 35 years. Many fond memories of Bernie. I had treat respect for him. Such a kind man.
Rest in peace my dear friend. Bernie could be a demanding boss, but he hired good people and expected great results, which he generally got. As I learned and matured under his direction we became great working colleagues and ultimately friends. I think of him often and have many fond memories of our special Ed department and numerous colleagues who all shred a great passion for education, and our many students and families. River Falls is a wonderful town with great schools, due in part to the love and hard work of Bernie Abrahamson 😎
I recently learned of Mr. Abrahamson’s passing. I always enjoyed seeing him in the clinic and also have fond memories of your Mother.
Sending my sympathy.
I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I worked for Bernie when he was Director of Pupil/Services. Great guy to worked with and for.
So sorry for your loss. Bernie was quite the character. We had many long conversations, either in person or on the phone, about him moving into Wellhaven Senior Apartments. He liked everything about it, but he just didn’t want to leave his home. He was so much fun, and brought a lot of joy when he came in.
