Samuel Ian Kolstad

Sam was born May 09, 2001, in Coon Rapids MN to Sean Kolstad and Nicole (Phillips) Durand, He graduated from New Richmond high school. Sam worked at Wells Concrete in Albany MN and enjoyed working with his hands. Sam was a calm and loving person that always wore a smile on his face. He would share words of encouragement when you were struggling, he always made sure there was always time for ‘one more hug’ and would tell you he loved you when he was leaving the house, Sam loved playing board/card games with his family, playing video games, riding four-wheelers with his dad, and playing pool. Sam really enjoyed nature and would love to sit outside to watch the animals and feed the deer in his backyard.

Sam is survived by his father, Sean Kolstad of New Richmond, WI; mother, Nicole (Jason) Durand of St Cloud, MN; grandparents, Wayne and Judy Kolstad of New Richmond WI; sister, Destiny (Christopher) and their daughter, Faye Phillips; brother, Joseph (Janessa) Roettger; girlfriend, Samantha Buckman; aunt, Vicky (Tom) Steinmetz; uncles, Rick (Chris) Phillips, Randy (Christa) Phillips, Marty Kolstad any many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Karen and Clifford Phillips; and uncle, Joseph Phillips.

A memorial gathering to celebrate the life of Sam was held on Saturday, September 27, 2025 from 1:00-4:00 pm at Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services (728 S Knowles Ave) in New Richmond.  A reception followed at Saltie’s upstairs event room (230 S Knowles Ave) in New Richmond

    I’m so sorry! I knew sam when he was little, grandparents Wayne and Judy would bring him into Suzannas. I’m thinking of the whole family! Judy, next time I see you at Walmart I’m

    I’m so so sorry, honey. No one should have to go through this. Hold onto those memories, even though they will make you cry. It’s the only way to get through it. Sending my love and prayers to you and your family.
