Ruth Kuss 06/11/2025

Ruth died peacefully at River Falls Area Hospital on June 11, 2025, following a brief illness. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Ruth was a positive and prayerful source of encouragement to family and friends, blessing all who knew her with unconditional love and support. We rejoice in the knowledge that Ruth has joined her loved ones in the “great cloud of witnesses” with her Lord in Heaven. A lifelong learner who seemingly was destined to teach, Ruth Joles was born in Boyceville, WI, on April 7, 1935. She enjoyed the family relationships and friendships of small town life and being a Boyceville Bulldog cheerleader, an active member of school and church groups, and a drummer in the high school band. Following high school graduation in 1953, Ruth attended UW-River Falls, where she met the love of her life, Phil Kuss. She graduated with an education degree in 1957 and married Phil one month later. After living and teaching in Boyceville and Cameron, WI, they moved back to River Falls. Ruth spent the remainder of her career at Afton-Lakeland (MN) Elementary, teaching 3rd grade and championing reading as a key to success. She enthusiastically mentored and supervised many student teachers through UWRF. Ruth was active in area teachers’ groups and served on the River Falls Public Library Foundation Board.  Ruth will be remembered as a world-class hugger. She loved her Ezekiel Lutheran Church family and relished time spent in Bible studies, Circle get-togethers, and WELCA events, and her brownies were favorite treats at many church gatherings. Among the great delights of Ruth’s life were teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School as well as singing with young ones at Ezekiel.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Phil; her parents Richard and Agnes Joles of Boyceville; her father- and mother-in-law Herman and Betty Kuss of River Falls; Kuss brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many other Joles and Kuss family members. Ruth dearly loved them all.  Ruth is survived by her children Richard (Barbara) of River Falls, Kristin of River Falls, and Jon (Elaine) of Hudson, WI; brother- and sister-in-law Don and Betsy Kuss of Schofield, WI; grandchildren Kyle, Shannon, Jessica and Johnathan. Damon and Ashley, Jim and Tracy, McKayla, and Kendra and Joe; and great grandchildren Kristofer, Xamyra, Ethan, Isabelle, Sophia, Elaina, Chelsea, Baron, Emma, and Breydan.

A funeral service was held at 11am on Tuesday June 24, 2025 at Ezekiel  Lutheran Church 202 S 2nd Street River Falls WI.   Visitation was on Monday June 23, 2025 from 4-7pm and on Tuesday from 10-11am at Ezekiel Lutheran Church.  Interment was in Tiffany Cemetery in Boyceville WI.Memorials are preferred to Ezekiel Lutheran Church (in memo line, Education & Youth) and the Free Clinic of Pierce and St. Croix Counties.  Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral and Cremation Services.

Ruthie and I watched the coronation of Queen Elizabeth together on her parent’s television together. We were just small children but what a great memory.

I was very sorry to hear of your loss. Ruth was a cornerstone of our church family — faithful, warm, and always serving (and hugging) with grace and kindness. Her legacy of love and faith will live on through all of you. May God’s peace surround you and may her memory be a lasting blessing.

I am SO sorry to hear about this great loss! Ruthie was one of the best of God’s creations!! I used to spend time at her house as a little girl and grew up seeing her at Ezekiel. She was so kind to everyone she met. Such a great example of God’s love for the world. She will be greatly missed! Prayers of comfort to Kris, Rich and John and all of her family

Ruth was a pure example of an angel on earth. Always kind and thoughtful. We will cherish the comforter she gave us when we moved away. When we told our son, Phil, about her death, he replied, “Aww, she was my church Grandma.” She was everyone’s Grandma! So many beautiful memories. Sending lots of hugs and ❤️ to the family!

To the Kuss family, I am so sorry to hear about the death of Mrs. Kuss! I was her student in about 1978, she is my favorite teacher I ever had! She was encouraging, loving, kind and made you feel special. I can remember her wonderful hugs, never turning anyone away even at the end of a long school day. In my third grade school year I received “perfect attendance” which involved getting a pin (which I still have), I was motivated to not miss school because I loved Mrs. Kuss that much! I also still have all my painted rocks that I earned by reading books. I was also privileged to go on a field trip where some our class stayed at her house…Wow, so crazy to think about now! I saw her by chance about 20 years ago it was such a thrill to see her again, I only hope I will see her again someday in heaven. A remarkable woman and teacher, I am so lucky to have known her in my lifetime…she was an angel that touched so many lives!

Dear Kuss Family, Deepest sympathy on the loss of your mother and grandmother. I echo all the other comments on how Mrs. Kuss made everyone feel so special (and always welcomed with a hug!) I know my parents appreciated knowing your parents back to those college years at UWRF and their shared time at Ezekiel. Mrs. Kuss witnessed her faith in such a beautiful way. I pray that you find comfort in that peace and promise. Most Sincerely, Kjersti Olson Duncan
