Matthew L. DeRusha, age 66 of River Falls, WI, died peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026, surrounded by his family at his home.
Matt was born on March 31, 1959, to Roger and Cleone (Vitek) DeRusha in Eau Claire, WI. He graduated from McDonell High School in Chippewa Falls, WI, in 1977. Matt furthered his education at CVTC-Eau Claire, earning an Associate Degree in Metal Fabrication. He dedicated over 40 years of his career to GEA in Hudson, WI, where he worked in sheet metal fabrication and as a manufacturing designer. Matt returned to GEA part-time after his retirement, largely because he loved his job and his coworkers.
Matt married Julie Odegard on May 17, 1980. Matt was a truly devoted father to their son and two daughters. He made sure to attend every one of his children’s games, recitals, and concerts. His greatest joy was his role as “Papa” to his four grandchildren.
Matt was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed playing in fantasy sports leagues with family and friends, and he had a special love for the Green Bay Packers. He had a passion for bowling and participated in both a men’s league and a couple’s league, and he generously shared his knowledge as a junior bowling coach. He loved traveling, going to movies and live theater, and playing Bingo with Julie. On most weekends, he could be found in Eau Claire visiting family, where he enjoyed going out to restaurants and attending family parties.
Matt is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Julie; his children, Curtis (Nicole) DeRusha, Stacy (Justin) Kimmel, and Jennifer (Ross) Kahn; and his grandchildren, Evelyn Kimmel, Ava DeRusha, Ari Kahn, and Jack DeRusha. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Sharon DeRusha and Joan (John) Gunderson, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roger DeRusha; mother, Cleone (Vitek) DeRusha; and brothers, Mark DeRusha and Michael DeRusha.
A celebration of Matt’s life was held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at St. Bridget Catholic Church 211 E Division Street River Falls, WI. Mass will be held at 11 am and visitation was also on Saturday from 9 – 11 am at the church. Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.
