Gene E. Shefland, Sr., age 76, passed away peacefully at his home in New Richmond with his family by his side on March 13, 2025. He was born the son of Raymond and June Shefland on October 13, 1948 in St Paul, MN. Gene was raised alongside five sisters and two brothers in Inver Grove Heights, MN.
After graduating from Simley High School in 1966, Gene enlisted in the US Navy in 1967. He served during Vietnam on the USS Ranger and Midway; was honorably discharged in 1973. After his miliary service, he worked as a machinist for 20 years for the Waterous Company and another 26 years at Doboy until he retired. Gene met the love of his life, Barbara, in 1974. Six months after meeting, they were married and moved to Wisconsin where they raised four beautiful children. Gene was a huge Minnesota Twins and Viking fan. Gene loved to fish and with his cousin, David, started a Minnesota Bass Club in which he enjoyed fishing alongside his wife for many years. Gene also enjoyed golfing, hunting, pool, cribbage, Bingo, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Gene was known as a jokester, kind and loving, and always right until the very end.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and June; brother Gordy; and son-in-law David Gramberg. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara; children, Lory Gramberg (Van Bundgaard), Michael (Karrie) Lynch, Gene Jr. (Carol) Shefland, and Cindy Rice (Richard Regan); grandchildren, Cameron Jacobson, Norah and Sammie Lynch, Dylan and Preston Gramberg, Hailey Rice (Brayden Stoeckl) and Jordan Rice, Chelsea (Jason) Myhre, Christian, Connor, Clara, and Chance Shefland; great grandchildren, Natalie, Hannah and Beckham; siblings Janet, Joyce, Julie, Jane, Jackie and Glenn; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Gene’s Life was held on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 3 pm at First Lutheran Church 218 County Road K New Richmond, WI. Visitation was also on Sunday from 1-3 pm at the church. Committal Services were at the New Richmond Cemetery.
