Donna Mae Preece, age 88 of New Richmond, WI, died on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at the St. Croix Health Center in New Richmond.
Donna was born on July 29, 1936 in Benson, Minnesota. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother as well as being an aunt and friend to many.
Donna had several careers in her lifetime. She graduated the University of Minnesota and embarked on her first career as a dental hygienist in Laramie, Wyoming, where she met her husband, Bill. After a few moves across the Midwest, Bill and Donna settled in New Richmond in 1969. After 25-30 years as a hygienist, she turned her energy to work as a local realtor, assisted with bookkeeping at her husband and son’s small business, and ended her working life as the Town Clerk for Richmond Township.
Donna loved travel and visited places as far flung as Germany, Norway, London, Ireland, Chile, Italy, France, China, Alaska, Hawaii, and nearly all 50 states. She and Bill spent many January weeks in Mazatlan, Mexico escaping from Wisconsin winters. Donna loved music and played the piano and sang in choirs for most of her life, attended theater and concert events, served on the school board, and developed lifelong friendships with many. Just about any meal was “the best ever” and she made a mean lemon meringue pie.
She was a fantastic mother and absolutely loved watching her grandchildren and especially her great-grandchildren grow up.
Donna is survived by her four children, Lisa, Mike (Tracy), Lori (Greg) Sherwood, and Ann Murray. She had five grandchildren, Kristen (Al) Proehl, Laurissa and Brandon Murray, and Austin (Dana) and Alli Preece; as well as three great-grandchildren, Aiden Murray, Sammie Proehl, and Annalise Kloos. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her parents, Morris and Marie Mitteness, and all of her siblings – her seven brothers, Gerhard, Ray, Milton, Morris, Donald, Jim and David, and her three sisters, Margaret Kolstad, Betty Jane Petersen, and Carole Pramaggiore.
A Celebration of Donna’s Life will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at 3 pm at Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services 728 S Knowles Avenue New Richmond, WI. Visitation will also be on Tuesday from 1-3 pm at the funeral home.

My condolences! I had a bit of contact with Donna when she was Town Clerk and she left a wonderful impression on me. I’m sorry for your loss.
When I was a new clerk in Kinnickinnic, Donna was one of the first clerks I met. She fast became a mentor and was my first call when I had questions. She was always willing to help. Donna will be missed by many, she was funny, caring and a good person. My condolences to the Family.
