Donald Kaul 12/09/2025

Donald (Don) Kaul, 86, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025.
Don was born in Ashley, ND, on March 30, 1939, to Arthur and Lorentine. He married Marlene Opp of Eureka, SD, on September 22, 1957, and they moved to Aberdeen, SD, where they raised two children, Michael and Lori. In 2004, Don and Marlene retired to New Richmond, WI, to be closer to their children.
As a child, Don treasured time spent working on the farm with his grandfather. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Don and Marlene raised prize-winning quarter horses on their own farm in Aberdeen. Don was an active member of South Dakota’s Quarter Horse Association, where he especially enjoyed helping young people discover connections with horses.
While in Aberdeen, Don worked as a salesman and later started his own insurance company. His career brought him on the road, where he met clients that became dear friends. Sharing experiences with family and friends was deeply important to Don, and he never turned down a game of pinochle, a coffee outing, or a fishing trip with those he loved. Don will be remembered for his wry sense of humor and warm laugh.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lorentine, and his wife, Marlene. He is survived by his sister, Marcella; his son, Michael (the late Kimberly); his daughter, Lori Obr (Timothy); his granddaughter, Alison Obr (Michael Farr) and her daughter, Nora; and his granddaughter, Anna Kaul (Kshithij Shrinath).
A Funeral Service was held on Monday, December 22, 2025 at 11 am at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church 365 W River Drive New Richmond, WI.  Visitation was also on Monday from 10-11 am at the church.  Interment was in the New Richmond Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services.

Gosh I enjoyed visiting with Don at the Deerfield and having him as a dance partner on our dance party nights with DJ Bill. He had such insight and knowledge and it was a joy to chat with him. Such a wonderful man. He will be missed.

I only remember Don from the ’50s-’60s when my parents and I would visit Ashley, ND. He is my cousin and 14 years my senior. I always enjoyed being around him – very funny and caring. He truly is in the hands of God today!

I enjoyed visiting with Don nearly every week at the Deerfield. I loved hearing about his prize winning Lil Salty Miss and all his adventures over the years with the horses, the farm and growing up in the Dakotas. He loved to talk about fishing and loved to retell the story of “the big walleye”. He loved to talk, and we had some good laughs together. It was obvious Don had touched a lot of people over the years. I will miss Don, and in the last weeks he would talk about being ready to go and how he missed his wife Marlene. My prayers and thoughts with the family. I will miss him.

I grew up with Don, he was my cousin. Adulthood took us geographically in different directions, but not in our Faith. My condolences to his family.

We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Donald Kaul during Kshithij and Anna’s wedding. He was warm and friendly. The thing we most remember is his dance with Anna. Our heartfelt condolences to Anna, Michael, Lori and the entire family.
