Joan Lois Smith, 89, of River Falls, WI, died on Sunday, January 19, 2020. Joan was born on June 30th, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph and Erna (Holz) Denz. She received her teaching degree and taught school in Illinois. She lived in River Falls, WI for the past 11 years where she enjoyed being involved in different organizations and attending the First Congregational Church. She was a charter member of the River Falls Optimists Club, a member of the Ladies Moose and a volunteer at the Hudson Hospital gift shop. Joan loved reading, attending concerts, and meeting and learning about new people. She made friends easily, loved travel and adventures, had a good sense of humor and was a gifted conversationalist and story teller. Preceding her in death are her parents; first husband, Lester C. Klaas; second husband, Charles T Smith; sister, Elaine (Don) Hruby; son, Steven (Jan) Klaas; and great-grandson Gabriel J. Novak. Surviving are her daughters, Cynthia (Gary) Novak of Pella, IA; Susan (Scott) Williams of River Falls, WI; Patricia (Chuck) Bigelow of Ypsilanti, MI; eleven grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.
The family will celebrate her life with a private memorial gathering in River Falls. The family is grateful to Interim HealthCare’s Hospice team at 625 Commerce Drive Suite 200 , Hudson, WI 54016 who lovingly cared for Joan in her final few months. Just heard the wretched bitch died. My father’s name, Charles Smith, should have been left out of the obituary as he would have been livid. Could someone in the family please return everything she stole from our family? I’ll make a guarantee that I won’t drive to River Falls just to spit on her grave. My condolences.”
